People spend a lot of money just to get smoother, younger skin. After all, the skin is the largest organ of a human body so it’s just natural that you make an effort to take care of it. Skincare routines vary for each individual, and while one routine or remedy may work for one person, it may worsen the skin of another. There are different types of skin and it is important to recognize what treatment options work best for you. While some people don’t have problems with allergies and other skin problems, some struggle with skin diseases such as rosacea. Rosacea is a common skin disease and it affects millions of people around the world. This skin disease causes the skin on the face to become red and makes blood vessels more visible.

Who Gets Rosacea?

Rosacea is more common among middle-aged females with light skin. Women are more likely to get rosacea compared to men but men do get rosacea, they usually get severe cases. Anyone can get this skin disease – people from different walks of life, even children. However, rosacea is more common in people:

  • Between 20 and 50 years old
  • Who are fair-skinned and have blonde hair
  • Who came from Celtic and Scandinavian origin
  • Who have family members with rosacea
  • Who have severe cases of acne

What Causes It?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is likely due to a combination of environmental and hereditary factors. The redness can slowly spread beyond the nose, to your cheeks, and down to the chin. The redness can even spread to a person’s ears and chest. Experts are still trying to find out the possible causes of rosacea. Here are the most common causes of it:

  • It runs in the family
  • The immune system may play a role
  • A mite that lives on the skin may trigger it
  • A protein that normally protects the skin may cause rosacea

There are also different factors that may cause flare-ups:

  • Extreme temperatures
  • Excessive sunlight
  • Emotional distress
  • Exercise
  • Alcohol
  • Medications such as blood pressure drugs
  • Various cosmetic products
  • Hot drinks and spicy foods

When you have rosacea, you may find it uncomfortable but it doesn’t mean that you cannot control it or prevent it from appearing. Here are tips on how to deal with rosacea-prone skin:

  • Use a cleanser that is gentle. Do not use bar soap and never use drying cleansers as it can be harsh on your skin. Stay away from brushes with a stiff-bristled brush because it can cause skin inflammation.
  • Use a product with an SPF of 30 or more. It can be gentle on your skin and works really well with rosacea-prone skin.
  • Clean your face twice a day – gently. Just remember to choose a mild, rosacea friendly cleanser.
  • Moisturize daily. It will help your skin stay hydrated. This will reduce irritation and your skin will feel more comfortable.
  • Stay away from products that contain alcohol, camphor, fragrance, glycolic acid, menthol, and lactic acid.
  • Test skincare products first. Before you apply a new product on your skin, be sure to test it first. To test, dab a small amount near your rosacea-prone skin. If it irritates your skin, do not use it.
